Millicent Fawcett
Millicent Fawcett
Millicent Fawcett was a writer and political activist. She led the woman suffrage campaign in England for 50 years. She was opposed to the militant tactics of Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst and fought to be seen as a legitimate force for women’s rights.
In 1897 she became president of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies. They utilized peaceful and legal means to promote their cause. Fawcett was involved with the NUWSS for twenty years.
A statute, commemorating Fawcett’s work, was erected in London’s Parliament Square in April of 2018. It stands alongside 11 men’s statutes. British Prime Minister Theresa May said that “she wouldn’t be where she was today had it not been for Fawcett, who campaigned for women’s right to vote.” Her statute bares the slogan, “Courage calls to courage everywhere and it’s voice cannot be denied.”
This pendant is made from hand cut copper and vitreous enamel (ground glass). It has been fired in a kiln after each application of glass, decal and watercolor enamel. The image is permanent.
