About Me…
Hello. My name is Tammi Sloan and I am the one woman show behind My Brown Wren. I was born into an extended family of artists. So, you could say that creating is in my genes. In the mid 80’s I took a metalsmithing and enameling course with Mary Chuduk at the Tempe Community Center, in Tempe, AZ. I knew from that moment forward that I was destined to be a jewelry artist. It just took me about 25 years to get there.
The inspiration for my silver and enamel jewelry comes from the organic patterns and textures of nature, by the shapes and colors of the mid-century period and by the minimalist qualities of Asian art. I love mixing these to create my own take on contemporary silver and enamel jewelry.
I find it most enjoyable to experiment with a combination of mediums to create an eclectic representation of how I see the world. You could say my work is driven by the exploration of new and unfamiliar territories. You might also say that I am a restless creative. I find it hard to settle on one thing and make just that.
In the end, I pride myself on creating beautiful, long lasting items that you will cherish for a lifetime. For me, it is more important to take my time developing a unique design that you won’t find elsewhere. Each work of art is a labor of love, wrought by my own hand. No two pieces are ever exactly alike, and that's the way I like it.
When I’m not creating in the studio or working at my part-time job as an accounts payable specialist for our local school district, I really enjoy teaching in small groups. It is so much fun to share what I know and to learn from my students. We all have so much to give and that is very humbling.
It’s not always possible for students to come to Whidbey Island for a class or private sessions, so I have jumped into the world of online education. I’ve been creating written tutorials since 2010, and video tutorials on enameling and enamel surface design techniques since 2012. I plan to start teaching Zoom classes once we build my studio in 2022.
If you are interested in learning a particular technique, please drop me a line or give me a call. I’d be happy to set something up with you!
